Anticipation

. . . I’m looking for the bell tower in the distance. It’ll be a few miles before it’s visible, but I’m looking all the same. It rises well above the treeline but stands in a form distinct from the silos and grain elevators  that emerge along the horizon. I anticipate the sight with some eagerness, ironic clanging symbol it has become of the quiet space of his presence that awaits me.

  1. I love these entries Lyla. Your writing is so lyrical. I feel quieted myself as I follow your steps to your seat.

  2. I still look for steeples against the skyline. Sometimes I have to look a little harder around trees and skyscrapers, but I still feel heart-warmed to see them.

  3. There is a Benedictine monastery not too far from where I live. Your words make me want to visit. Hmmm…

  4. I’m just now discovering this collection.

You keep amazing me, Lyla. I’d like to be you when I grow up.

Thanks for this! (yes, that’s in my outside voice.)

  6. Like Jennifer, I have a fascination with steeples.

I wish I could find a quiet place like this to visit nearby. For now, I need to just go to the yard. :)

An online friend once sent me a King’s Cake straight from New Orleans. It was delicious.

  8. Loved reading this yesterday, as I do each time you post there. And thanks for this visual – really striking. And very different from silos.

You really need to come west sometime and visit that Camaldoles monastery on Hiway 1 – they actually have hermitage trailers on site you can rent for silent, directed retreats. I’m going to do that some day. I hope. I posted a few shots of the view from up there and the light inside their very austere chapel in that photo essay I did on Highway one last month. I’ll try posting the link here, but your spam catcher may shift me to the outbox: http://drgtjustwondering.blogspot.com/2012/01/winding-road-highway-1.html

  10. Gorgeous shot. What do you say we head out to Diana’s monastery, rent a trailer and retreat from the noise? We can take Sandy along too, since she’s looking for some quiet :) . Sounds like a dream to me.

But that's just me. What do you think?
