Stairs
How many more steps
past gaping
slats that hide
rangy arms and
scabbed feelers
they only lunge through
when lights go out
and little-girl legs
clamber
by ones and
twos and
threes
So I ask
why
did You split
dark
from light and
night
from day
You could just
leave
lights on

My only explanation, and defense, is L.L. Barkat’s poetry prompt at High Calling Blogs to write about or from the perspective of some kind of monster. The one that taught me to take the stairs two at a time still makes me pull my socks up to my knees. Check out HCB for Random Acts of Poetry to read some truly beautiful words about the monsters among us. Here’s a taste of what you’ll get over there:

Oh that brings back memories! I used to race up the basement stairs… so frightened of the monster faces in the pine paneling!

Pine knots would have put me over the top. My legs weren’t long enough to scale the steps by fours.

nAncY, you already took “mange.”

This is why your steps are carpeted?

Maybe.

You made me lift my feet up off the floor while reading. Thanks a lot. Now, I’m going to have to leap from the light switch to the bed tonight.

Flip the switch a few times and make sure there’s a clear path. You’ll be fine.

I have always been a fan of nightlights. Of course, my explanation is they light the way to the bathroom.

I LOVE that photo. And that ending… oh… the longing…

Nancy, one never wants to be frightened on a trip to the bathroom. Night light is a good call.
Kelly, would leave it to a light-craver to see that part.

this question you ask is so profound lyla!
it stretches into every element of being human.
the photo speaks most loudly to me.
